JOAN SALAT, LCSW has been working with people with cancer since 1976. She was involved in the initial stages of the first Orange Co. Hospice. In 1977, she did an internship at the U. of Utah sponsored by the National Cancer Institute providing in-home counseling for terminally-ill cancer patients and their families. In the early 90's, Joan volunteered at several organizations in providing emotional support for the dying at their bedside, particularly for those who had no family to be with them. She was also the Co-ordinator of the Spiritual Care Program for the Living and Dying through RIGPA in Los Angeles. The spiritual support group was for mental health and healthcare providers that worked with the terminally ill and focused on learning how to be more present for the patient in transition. During her work at Cedars Sinai Outpatient Cancer Center, Joan ran a couple outpatient groups for cancer patients, including a women's sexuality group that brought focus and depth to her work during her attendance at UCLA's Advanced Sexuality Program, focusing on sexuality and cancer. Joan has attended professional and spiritual workshops internationally and was diagnosed with cancer herself in the last few years, only adding to the depth and richness of working with others touched by cancer.
